Managing Payroll Efficiently on the Gold Coast
Knowing exactly how much to pay your staff and when to pay them can be complex and confusing. But, it’s not only paying wages to your staff that you need to worry about… You are also required to pay Superannuation, WorkCover premiums and provide your employees with Payment Summaries at the end of each financial year.
For any company, it is essential to pay your employees the correct amount on time. If wages paid are incorrect or late, employees will become disheartened and angry, staff will begin to leave their jobs, and this could affect the overall success of your company. Not to mention, you will also be in big trouble with the ATO if you don’t submit your payroll returns and pay tax deducted correctly and on time.
For many small companies, it can be difficult to keep on top of payroll related tasks, because they just don’t have enough resources to do so. It all sounds overwhelming, but if you need a hand, we can take care of your payroll matters for you.
We are experienced professionals with over 15 years’ experience providing payroll services, and we can come alongside and support your business by providing full or partial payroll assistance.
We will also make sure that you’re compliant with the ATO and that you avoid any unexpected problems and audits by Fair Work Australia.

Understanding the Australian Payroll System
Australia’s payroll and tax system is extremely complicated and it can be incredibly difficult for companies to understand and adhere to, particularly for those small businesses that simply don’t have the time nor the resources to devote to it.
All payroll taxes are levied at a state level, which means that payroll taxes on the Gold Coast and throughout Queensland are different to other parts of Australia.
In addition, there are many important details that you need to account for when computing Pay As You Go (PAYG) taxation. These include superannuation contributions, Medicare levy, HELP and SFSS debts, in addition to numerous other tax offsets. Any staff termination payments made are taxed at different rates and redundancy payments need particular attention, as they are different again. You also must consider and account for things such as taxes on fringe benefits, unused leave payments, and a variety of other payments and expenses.
If all that sounds confusing enough, the ATO constantly changes the rules and you need to be properly up-to-date with everything to remain fully compliant.
Large enterprises that have their own payroll and human resources departments can usually manage to keep up with the ATO’s complex and constantly changing rules. However, if you are a smaller sized business, without a dedicated accounts and human resources section, you will most likely struggle to meet the demands of the ATO. The helpful services of our experienced bookkeeping team would definitely be beneficial to you.
Understanding Payroll Processing
The first step in payroll processing is to collect all relevant data about each of your employees. Then you must provide required information as outlined by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to each one of your employees. This information includes:
- Each employee’s personal details
- Tax File Number Declaration Form
- Award or Employment Agreement
- Superannuation Choice Form
- Fair Work Information Statement, including a copy of the National Employment Standards
This information is required by law and is also necessary in order to pay each of your staff members correctly.
We recommend providing each of your employees with an Induction Pack, which contains all of the above documents. If you need assistance putting an Employee Induction Pack together, we can help you prepare one.
Once you have gathered the above data from your employees, this data can then be inputted in to your computerised accounting system. We work with all types of cloud-based accounting software. Our preferences are Quickbooks Online, Xero, MYOB and Reckon.
If you would prefer to process your own payroll in-house, we also provide basic Payroll Packages which only include payroll set-up and training, to allow you to take care of the rest.
Deciphering Pay Rates
In addition to including the standard pay for each staff member, employee earnings also take in to account entitlements and deductions. As an employer, you also need to clarify such things as:
- Are you paying staff under an award?
- Are you paying them too much or too little?
- Are you meeting your PAYG (Pay As You Go) and Superannuation requirements?
If any of this sounds confusing or you are unsure how to answer any of these questions, contact us today and we can conduct a payroll review of your business and provide helpful recommendations and feedback.
We provide payroll and bookkeeping services to all areas of the Gold Coast.
We also service the surrounding areas of Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.
Let the professionals at R & R Bookkeepers take care of your payroll processing and tedious bookkeeping tasks for you.
